Date posted:

It is now almost three years since the then-Acting Equal Opportunity Commissioner Steph Halliday provided the 2021 Review of harassment in the legal profession (SA) to the Attorney-General. The 2021 Review made for sobering reading for all of us who work in or deal with the legal profession in South Australia.

Acting Commissioner Halliday’s final recommendation was for a review into the effectiveness of the laws, policies, structure and complaint mechanisms relating to harassment, including sexual harassment, in the South Australian legal profession within three years of the publication of her 2021 Review.

On 14 February 2024, the Attorney-General, the Honourable Kyam Maher MLC, announced the commencement of the 2024 Review of Harassment in the South Australian Legal Profession.

The Equal Opportunity Commissioner will conduct a survey of those who work, or who have worked, in a workplace that provides legal services. The anonymous and confidential survey can be accessed from the Equal Opportunity SA website or directly here:

I encourage anyone who has experienced or has knowledge of harassment in the profession to participate. I also encourage you to consider making a complaint to me or to report your experience through my anonymous on-line reporting tool Speak safely.
